A bank routing number is also known as an American Bankers Association (ABA) number and as a Routing Transit Number (RTN). Routing numbers exist to help identify the financial institution on which the check was drawn. Since 1910 the American Bankers Association (ABA) has used a nine-digit routing transit number to identify the issuing American bank and automate checks processing.
